South Africa’s immigration policy a sensitive and complex issue

View descriptionShare

South Africa’s immigration policy is back in focus following President Cyril Ramaphosa’s address to the nation, where he touched on governance, security and the socio-economic pressures facing the country. Immigration remains a sensitive and complex issue, closely linked to border management, economic participation and social cohesion.

To unpack what the President’s remarks mean in practice, Mpho Sithole spoke to Dr Rebecca Walker, Senior Research Consultant at the African Centre for Migration & Society (ACMS) at Wits University.

Dr Walker offers insight into the current policy direction, its implications, and whether South Africa is striking the right balance between enforcement, human rights and economic needs.
