SA police officer holds family hostage, fatally shoots nephew before turning gum on himself

View descriptionShare

"Today we turn to a deeply troubling story out of Mamelodi - a township northeast of South Africa's capital Pretoria,  where a hostage standoff ended in the tragic deaths of a police constable and his teenage nephew. Beyond the heartbreak, this case raises pressing questions about stress in the police force, the use of service firearms in domestic settings, and whether enough is being done to support officers' mental health. To help us unpack these issues, Tsepiso Makwetla spoke to Lisa Vetten, a scholar and researcher specialising in violence against women, with extensive experience analysing the intersection of gender, policing, and social services."
