South Sudan's armed opposition party says it has been involved in heavy fighting with government forces in Jonglei state. The Sudan People's Liberation Movement-in-Opposition(SPLM-IO) described the confrontation as brutal and said it could prove to be decisive. The South Sudanese military said it was trying to recapture all areas controlled by the opposition. The two warring parties are factions of the movement that led South Sudan to independence in 2011.
