In a major shift in US refugee policy, President Donald Trump has set the refugee admissions ceiling for the 2026 fiscal year at just 7 500 people, the lowest level in US history. The directive, published in the Federal Register, states that the US will prioritise refugee admissions “primarily to Afrikaners from South Africa and other victims of illegal or unjust discrimination in their respective homelands.” Tsepiso Makwetla spoke to James Henry, Global Justice Fellow at Yale University.
