Intense rainfall in Kenya causes severe flooding

View descriptionShare

Intense rainfall in Kenya since early March has caused severe flooding, leading to at least 110 deaths and significant displacement, particularly in Nairobi and western regions.

Over 30 counties are affected, with thousands displaced, homes destroyed, and critical infrastructure, including roads and schools, damaged. Nairobi has the highest fatalities followed by the Eastern and Rift Valley regions.

The Kenya Meteorological Department warns of continued rainfall, prompting alerts to move to higher ground. While relief efforts are ongoing, damaged infrastructure has made some areas inaccessible. Flash floods, which started on March 6th, have severely affected agriculture and increased the risk of waterborne diseases.

Mpho Sithole spoke to Chris K. Ngetich, Climate Scientist, Sub-Seasonal to Seasonal Forecasting at Kenya's Meteorological Department.
