Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama has granted amnesty to 998 prisoners following a recommendation from the country's Prisons Service Council. The council had initially sought pardon for 1 014 individuals ranging from death row to first-time offenders. The country's presidency says of those granted amnesty, over 80 death row prisoners will have their sentences converted to life imprisonment. The decision has been welcomed by a number of human rights organisations.
