It has been billed as the start of a new chapter in South Africa's democracy. The first National Convention officially opened in Pretoria on Friday, despite earlier doubts over whether it would go ahead.
More than 1000 delegates were in attendance, among them President Cyril Ramaphosa, who delivered the keynote address.
