A new study by the Academy of Science of South Africa, has identified extreme heat as one of the fastest-growing threats to health and livelihoods across Southern Africa. The report, titled "Climate Change and Extreme Heat: Strengthening Resilience and Adaptive Capacity in the Southern African Development Community," highlights how rising temperatures are placing increasing strain on health systems, food security, labour conditions, urban environments, and ecosystems. Experts warn that as climate change intensifies, extreme heat events are becoming more frequent, more severe, and more dangerous. Mpho Sithole spoke to South African Weather Service meteorologist, Lehlohonolo Thobela.
