CSIR to Deliver Real-Time Local Election Projections in South Africa

Uganda's political and military landscape is under renewed scrutiny following the arrest of former deputy military chief General Peter Elwelu on allegations of plotting to destabilise parts of the country.

The arrest comes amid growing speculation about succession politics in Uganda, where President Yoweri Museveni has extended his decades-long rule and his son, military chief General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has already declared his intention to run for president in 2031.

Gender Equality Commission to Monitor Local Elections in South Africa
South Africa's Commission for Gender Equality will deploy monitors across the country during the 2026 Local Government Elections.

The Commission says the focus is on whether all South Africans, especially women and other vulnerable groups, can participate freely and without discrimination.

The deployment comes as special voting concludes today and the country heads into the main election tomorrow.

Gender Equality Commission to Monitor Local Elections in SA

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), says it has reprioritised its resources to ensure comprehensive coverage of the 2026 Local Government Elections, despite ongoing financial constraints.

Group Chief Executive Officer Nomsa Chabeli says the public broadcaster has scaled back some of its regular programming to channel resources towards election-related content, and deploy teams across the country. 

Chabeli made these remarks while speaking to the SABC at the Election Results Operations Centre (ROC) in Midrand, north of the city of Johannesburg, on Tuesday.
