The Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services, or JICS, has raised serious concerns about the use of force in South Africa's correctional facilities. According to its latest Annual Report, the Inspectorate received more than 500 reports of alleged use of force against inmates during the 2025/26 financial year and investigated several cases in which inmates allegedly died as a result of excessive force.
The report also highlights ongoing concerns about overcrowding, prolonged solitary confinement, and the growing number of state patients and non-nationals in correctional centres.
Mpho Sithole spoke to Inspecting Judge of the Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services, Judge Lee Bozalek.
