The Gambia is facing growing frustration over prolonged power cuts, with some residents reporting blackouts lasting up to 48 hours. The outages have sparked protests in Banjul and surrounding areas, with police using tear gas to disperse crowds.

President Adama Barrow has acknowledged the severity of the crisis, describing it as a national emergency and promising that power supplies will improve by the end of October. The government says new generating capacity is on the way, while the national electricity utility has blamed reduced electricity imports and technical problems for the outages.

With presidential elections expected in December and Barrow seeking a controversial third term, the power crisis is also becoming a political issue.

Guinean First Counsellor in charge of Economic Affairs at the High Commission in South Africa, Santou Dabou, says Guinea is open for business and investment following the country's recent presidential elections and the formation of what she describes as a stable government.

Dabou says the return to political stability is creating opportunities for increased trade, investment and small business development.

She was speaking to Channel Africa on the sidelines of the third edition of the Embassies Business and Conference, held over two days at the CSIR in Pretoria, which concluded on Wednesday.

As the world looks for ways to cut carbon emissions from transport, electric vehicles (EVs) are increasingly being seen as part of the solution. But how much difference can EVs really make in South Africa, and how do they perform under local driving and weather conditions?

On World EV Day, Zero Carbon Charge (CHARGE) launched the N3 EV Real-World Test between Johannesburg and Durban. The initiative will collect real-world data on EV range, energy consumption and charging performance, while using two solar-powered, off-grid charging hubs along the route.

The aim is not only to help motorists understand whether EVs are practical for long-distance travel, but also to build a clearer picture of the role electric mobility can play in reducing transport emissions.
