South Africa spends billions each year procuring essential medicines, including life-saving antiretroviral (ARV) treatment, for its public healthcare system. However, a recent incident in which bags of ARVs and other pharmaceutical products were discovered on a bus travelling towards Zimbabwe and Malawi following a fatal crash has raised serious concerns.
The African Transformation Movement (ATM) has written to the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Health, calling for an urgent parliamentary engagement on the alleged illegal export and smuggling of medicinal products from South Africa.
To discuss the matter further, Mpho Sithole spoke to Vuyolwethu Zungula, President of the African Transformation Movement.
