The just-opened Africa CEO Forum in Kigali, Rwanda, has brought together presidents from several African countries, executives from major international financial institutions, global organizations, and policymakers from around the world.

The two-day summit is serving as a major platform for discussions on how Africa can navigate growing global economic and security challenges while also redefining its role in an increasingly uncertain world.

2-day Africa CEO Forum in Rwanda redefines its role

South Africa's (SA) Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Sindisiwe Chikunga, has condemned corruption within the public service, accusing officials of exploiting desperate young job seekers.

Speaking at the launch of the national programme marking the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Youth Uprisings in Soweto on Thursday, Chikunga slammed reports that applicants are being forced to pay bribes of up to R15 000 to secure places at nursing colleges. She described the practice as "corruption of the highest order" and urged victims to report those responsible to law enforcement authorities.

A report by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification has raised alarm over a deepening hunger crisis in Somalia. The latest findings show that more than 6 million people,  nearly one in three Somalis, are facing acute food insecurity, with close to 2 million already in emergency conditions.

Oxfam says communities are no longer coping,  they are simply trying to survive, as water sources dry up, crops fail, and families are forced to flee their homes in search of food.

Mpho Sithole spoke to Sameer Kariya, Oxfam's Humanitarian Lead in Somalia, to unpack the scale of this crisis and what urgent action is needed.

As global health systems face increasingly complex disease threats, the focus is shifting toward preparedness, particularly when it comes to early detection, diagnostics, and surveillance. Emerging infectious diseases, including hantaviruses such as the Andes virus, are a reminder of how quickly health risks can evolve in an interconnected world.

 While these diseases may not yet pose a widespread threat locally, they highlight critical gaps in laboratory capacity, frontline detection, and access to timely testing. Healthcare experts say strengthening diagnostic systems and supporting frontline healthcare workers will be key to responding effectively to future outbreaks.
