Zack's Good News

In Sweden, Maine, the local food pantry holds a yearly fundraiser called the Full Side of Beef Raffle. The name says it all. People in the community buy raffle tickets — and the person who wins the raffle gets a full side of beef, which can end up being up to 350 pounds of meat. This year, the big winner was Jeanne Ouellette — who donated the prize back to the Sweden Food Pantry to help feed families in need. The Executive Director of the food pantry described Jeanne's donation as "an extraordinary act of kindness.” While Jeanne admits she was surprised and thrilled to win, it was also an easy decision to give the food back. “I never win anything, but I wanted to support the pantry," she said. "When my name was called, I was amazed — but I immediately knew I wanted the beef to go to the pantry and its shoppers.”

A retired couple in England has spent the last 15 years fostering 59 rescue dogs in their home — and they have zero plans of stopping. Nicole and Gary Wordsworth take in pups from a local shelter whenever the dogs get too stressed or overwhelmed by kennel life. The dogs end up staying anywhere from a couple of nights to 18 months — and come in all shapes and sizes, including everything from a cuddle-loving husky that does a "happy food dance" to a giant American bulldog. Nicole and Gary love helping the nervous pups relax, uncover their unique personalities, and find their forever homes. While the dogs enjoy their stay, Nicole and Gary get a lot out of the experience as well. "It is so rewarding to see them relax and find their little personality poking out — you are doing a good thing," explained Gary. "And you get to have a furry friend by your side. It's a win-win.”

A college student at Ole Miss named Nathan Won just wrapped up an epic 67-day, 4500-mile bicycle ride all the way from Seattle to Washington, D.C. — all to raise money and support people with disabilities. Nathan and his fraternity brothers pedaled 70 to 80 miles a day, sometimes hitting 130 miles in a single stretch. They stopped at 45 care centers along the route to play games, sing songs, and build real friendships with residents. Along the way, Nathan personally raised over $10,000 for the cause. After facing tough mountain climbs and long days in the saddle, he says the incredible people he met along the way made every single pedal stroke worth it. “The main point of the trip is, yes, we cycle," said Nathan. "But also to make friendship visits. We do this to make meaningful relationships and build a connection. We don’t just go there and say ‘Hi.’ The main purpose for me is just to raise awareness and pretty much advocate for the disability community."

Barbara Daniels spent 30 years as a teacher in Virginia before retiring in 2011. And instead of taking it easy, she spent the last 15 years turning a local thrift shop into a community powerhouse. Barbara runs the Cumberland Clothes Closet, where she works with volunteers to sort gently used clothes, books, and household goods to keep prices dirt cheap for local families. Even better? Every single cent of profit gets poured right back into her town. Under her leadership, the shop has handed out $10,000 in student scholarships, funded the local library, chipped in for the volunteer fire department, and supported local food banks. Barbara doesn't consider herself the centerpiece of the effort — or see anything extraordinary in her work. Instead, she credits the store's true success to the bond between volunteers and customers. Without them, she says, helping those in need would be impossible. As she explains, "Our community is a part of us, and we are a part of it."

A man in Boise, Idaho, who beat homelessness and addiction just won $200,000 on a lottery ticket — and his very first move was to give $20,000 back to the shelter that helped him turn his life around. The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, walked right into the Interfaith Sanctuary shelter to hand over 10% of his cash prize, telling the staff he wanted to thank them for saving his life. Thanks to the care and compassion he received at the shelter, he has been sober for over two years and is living in his own home. The director of the shelter, Jodi Peterson, said the donation is the largest monetary gift ever received from a former shelter guest and will fund about 500 nights of care to those in need in the community.

Twelve-year-old Sadie Hutson of North Carolina has turned a fun hobby into a mission to bring comfort to kids who are dealing with bumpy times. Sadie and her mom hunt through thrift stores to rescue worn-out stuffed animals — and then Sadie gets to work washing, repairing, and re-stuffing them by hand. When Sadie learned the local American Red Cross ran low on comfort toys for young disaster victims, she stepped up and delivered an incredible donation of 114 restored bears, bunnies, and other stuffed animal friends. The Red Cross recently honored Sadie with a special award at a local fire station — but Sadie says she’s just happy to keep the project going so kids going through tough times know someone cares. Sadie also hopes her project inspires other young people to make a difference in their own communities. "As long as you do it through the kindness of your heart, you can do it," she said.

Pete Gall of Frankfort, Kentucky, just pulled off an incredible feat of endurance and charity, running 450 miles across the Bluegrass State in just 19 days -- while raising money for a group called the And Still Foundation. Pete averaged nearly a marathon every day while braving extreme heat, dealing with a swollen Achilles, and dodging hay trucks on narrow country roads. He was motivated to tackle the challenge each day because he was raising money for the And Still Foundation, a charity that supports local kids through mentorship and fitness programs. Pete said, “It just felt like people were kind of counting on me whether they were or not. That’s just how I took it, to kind of give myself a little bit of a mental edge when I was out.”

New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye -- one of the rising stars in the NFL -- and his wife Ann Michael just made a huge impact off the field by donating $15,000 to Alfred Lima Elementary School in Providence, Rhode Island. Surprising the staff through his Mayeday Foundation, the funds were handed straight to teachers in the form of gift cards so they could skip paying out of pocket for classroom supplies. Some of the educators at Alfred Lima already have big plans for the cash. Dual-language teachers are stocking up on new bilingual books, a reading specialist is clearing out her Amazon cart filled with hands-on learning games, and the school's student-run "Lima News Crew" is looking to upgrade their broadcast studio with new microphones and green screen gear to make their morning announcements pop.

As a sixth grader, Ella Bettner of Faribault, Minnesota, made and sold bracelets to help classmates who couldn’t afford their school lunches. That simple act of generosity has grown into an amazing community program. Ella, who's now in high school, has created a charity group called No Tummies Left Behind. The group not only wipes out school lunch debt, but also supports local food banks, partners with community meal programs, and works to address food insecurity outside the classroom. So far, No Tummies Left Behind has raised over $22,000. Ella recently made a presentation to the Faribault School District, where she presented a check that wipes out the district’s negative lunch balance so every student starts with a clean slate. School board member Casie Steeves congratulated Ella for all her hard work and accomplishments through the years. “The last five years have been awesome to see you grow, just yourself personally and your organization,” Casie said. “Keep up the great work and it’s humbling to watch you do what you do.”

Back in 2024, a formerly homeless English man named Rhys Wynne-Jones stepped inside a church after hours and played the piano. A video of this performance went viral, which led to Rhys getting some amazing opportunities, including performing with music celebrities. Since then, Rhys has enjoyed a stable home life — and has dedicated the last year to paying it forward. While he still does not describe himself as a professional musician or celebrity, he uses his performances to raise money for causes linked to homelessness. Since his big breakthrough, Rhys has raised more than $54,000 and he hopes his performances — and his amazing story — inspire others to help others who might be going through some tough times.

On Sunday, ultrarunner Brady McDonald became the first person to run a 50K race in all 50 states over 50 consecutive days. And along the way, he raised over $1 million for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Brady crossed the finish line of his 50th and final 31-mile run in Hawaii — and officially hit his $1 million fundraising goal the very next day. All of Brady's running and fundraising means Make-A-Wish will be able to grant roughly 100 life-changing wishes for children battling critical illnesses across the country. In an Instagram post, he thanked his family, crew, team, friends, and "every single person who ran with me, donated, shared, followed, or helped carry this mission forward." Brady also said he hoped to inspire others. "More than anything, I hope this journey showed someone what’s possible when you commit to something bigger than yourself. Whatever your gift is, you can use it to help others."

Three friends in Omaha, Nebraska, are setting off on an epic 850-mile bicycle trip from Nebraska to Tennessee to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Andy Tweedy came up with the wild idea to cycle from Omaha to Memphis and recruited his buddies Clay Christian and Paul McCoy to join him. So now, the three friends will pedal through Iowa and Missouri, catch a ferry across the Mississippi River, and carry hand-written letters from local school kids directly to young patients in Memphis. They've already raised $3000 for St. Jude and have a goal of raising $25,000 this year —with this ride generating the most buzz for attention and donations to the cause.

On Monday, dog owners gathered at Louisiana Downs (a horse racing track) for the annual Wiener Dog Charity Races, which raised money to help injured shelter animals across Northwest Louisiana. The event featured dachshunds racing to the finish line in front of cheering crowds, who also offered up donations to local rescues. Organizers say the money will pay for vital medical care, including physical therapy and other treatments for rescued pets in need. And along the way, families in the community enjoyed plenty of smiles, both in the stands and on the racetrack. One of the participants, Kyle Duke, who brought his dog, Bean, to the races, explained why the event is such a big hit. “It’s just the atmosphere," Kyle said. "All the people, all the little kids. They like to see the dogs run, everyone wants to pet them, and you have a good time."

Neal Augenstein and his family recently had a scare when their family cat named Mike didn't come home for dinner. For two days, Neal searched the neighborhood, walking around with a bag of treats and calling Mike’s name. He even checked near the sewers, but there was no sign of him. Then Neal remembered something that made his stomach sink. His family had recently gotten rid of three couches — and Neal had a sinking feeling that Mike was in one of the couches when it was taken away to the landfill. Unfortunately, this is exactly what happened, which put everyone involved on high alert. Neal feared for the worst, imagining that Mike was somewhere inside a dangerous waste facility, surrounded by machinery and trash. Luckily, heavy equipment operator Mauricio Martinez spotted Mike trapped on a 15-foot ledge inside a trash pit. Landfill workers positioned a loader bucket under the ledge to scoop him up. And after a brief escape into a storage room, animal control safely rescued Mike and brought him safely home to his family. "There were so many hands that touched Mike," said Neal. "And there were so many places where things could have gone very badly, but things turned out perfectly, and I'm delighted to have him home. Just an amazingly happy ending, and I'm so thankful to everyone who played a part in it,” he said.

South Florida teenagers Aashrita Kaza and her brother, Anish, designed a charity app called "Pizza for a Purpose" to help local pizzerias, businesses, and individual donors deliver fresh meals directly to neighborhood nonprofit groups. Aashrita and Anish started the project in 2024 after they spent some time volunteering at food banks and noticed young children showing up for food. The siblings wanted to give a boost to the kids by making it easier for people in the community to make donations. So they developed an app that streamlines the donation process, allowing anyone to send fresh pizzas from nearby restaurants to charities like The Pantry of Broward. The platform has already resulted in the delivery of over 25,000 pizza slices to families and seniors across Broward County, turning everyday takeout orders into hot, weekly meals for neighbors in need. “The reaction really warms our hearts," said Aashrita. "Their faces just light up the second they get the pizza. It’s very rewarding because it makes everything we do worth it.

An Arizona father and son work side-by-side in their garage, fixing cars at deeply discounted prices to make sure no one gets left stranded by outrageous repair bills. Nearly 11 years ago, when Michael Kuba faced a $4000 estimate to fix the broken air conditioner in his family's van, he bought some tools, turned to YouTube tutorials, and learned to fix it himself. That repair job inspired Michael to keep learning — and to offer his services to those who otherwise couldn't afford it. These days, he and his 16-year-old son, Matthew, operate The Junkie Garage, a nonprofit organization where Kuba fix cars for whatever customers can afford to donate — no income checks or paperwork required. Working mostly on essential maintenance like brakes, alternators, and A/C systems, Kuba and Matthew slash typical repair costs from thousands down to an average of under $300, keeping families safe on the road — and giving the two men plenty of quality father-son time.

A pizzeria owner in New York City is making sure no one in his neighborhood has to go hungry.  Daniel Romano, owner of D’Romano’s Pizza in the Bronx, started offering free slices after he saw a woman searching through the restaurant’s trash for food. Romano brought her inside, gave her a fresh slice, and told her she never needed to be embarrassed to ask for help. The experience inspired him to put a handwritten sign on the window inviting anyone who’s hungry to come in for a free slice of pizza and water. The message has resonated far beyond the Bronx, with people from across the country calling to donate and help cover the cost of meals for those in need. Romano says his late mother used to always tell him, "A desperate person will always make a better decision on a full stomach than on an empty one." What began with one act of compassion has grown into a community effort, with Romano hoping to remind people that everyone deserves not only a hot meal, but also dignity and kindness.

A heartwarming adoption story is getting attention online. A TikTok creator named Rachel, who calls herself an "animal influencer," visited a shelter and asked to meet its "least wanted dog," which turned out to be a pit bull named Nancy who has received no adoption applications. Nancy arrived at the shelter after her owner died and was very depressed. Rachel decided she was going to visit Nancy and take her on weekly outings. She shared videos that showed a playful, affectionate dog who loved toys, kisses, and time at the park. She also helped work on Nancy's training to boost her chances of finding a home. The videos gave viewers a completely different picture of the shelter dog's personality, and after weeks of attention and care, Nancy was finally adopted. The story is also sparking conversations about pit bulls, which are disproportionately represented in U.S. animal shelters.

Marc Brown, an attorney in Columbia, South Carolina, just donated 1,300 backpacks filled with school supplies to students in Hampton County, enough to provide a bookbag for every public school student from Pre-K through sixth grade in the district. Brown says supporting students is especially important because his mother was a life-long teacher. "My mom was a public school teacher in South Carolina for over 30 years, so I make it a goal to support students however I can," he said.  "By showing out appreciation to the families across Hampton County, we are empowering our community." The giveaway ensures hundreds of families can start the school year with one less expense to worry about.

Children’s Palace is a preschool and childcare center in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Along with the usual preschool and childcare fun the kids enjoy, Children's Palace also organizes an event called "Birthday Party for a Friend We Don't Know" drive, which teaches students the power of generosity. Last week, the kids at Children’s Palace put together a collection of gifts for a young friend at the La Crosse Salvation Army Shelter — and then delivered the gifts, along with freshly baked cakes. Thanks to extra support from different businesses and organizations in the area, Children's Palace pulled off its largest donation since starting the tradition back in 2004 — and giving shelter kids a big, unforgettable birthday celebration.

David Treasure, who lives near Bristol, England, was diagnosed with Parkinson's 11 years ago. Over the weekend, he celebrated his 90th birthday by completing a 90-mile walking challenge to raise money and awareness for a Parkinson's charity in the UK. David originally wanted to do a birthday skydive. His family and doctors convinced him to pick a different challenge — so he set off on his 90-mile mission. Pushing his walker through rain, ice, and heatwaves, David logged loops around his local cul-de-sac whenever his energy allowed. Supported by his proud family, David’s stubborn determination paid off, raising more than $4500 to fund research and support for future generations fighting the disease. As for his next big adventure? David says he’ll still take the occasional stroll — but is in no hurry to log another 90 miles anytime soon.

Christine and John Sheppard of Jefferson County, Missouri, are getting ready to move closer to their daughter, Kim. While packing up their home, Christine and John found some boxes filled with Kim’s childhood Beanie Baby collection. They asked Kim if she wanted to keep the toys that were collected in the 1990s. Inspired by a social media video, Kim suggested giving the plushies to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, where they were handed off to the department's Crisis Intervention Unit. It was a win all around. Deputies now keep the toys in their patrol cars to hand out to kids during scary or traumatic emergency calls. And the Sheppard family was able to declutter — all while feeling great that these special toys are getting a second life, calming children during bumpy times.

It's back to school time, so Jadyn Sawyer of Mount Laurel, New Jersey, hopped in her car and drove nearly 800 miles to the University of Georgia. She arrived after an 11-hour journey — and spotted a tiny paw reaching out from beneath her vehicle. Sure enough. There was a kitten tucked underneath in her car. Jadyn reached out to campus police to help free the kitten. They unbolted parts of the undercarriage to reach the kitten, but it was wedged in too tight. Jadyn and the police then reached out to the local auto repair shop Tires Plus. The crew at the shop took the car apart enough to safely remove the little guy — and even refused to charge a fee for the rescue. Now named Jersey — in honor of his unexpected road trip — the adventurous kitten is healthy, thriving, and getting ready for adoption through a local rescue group.

Reed Robinson of Cherokee County, Kansas, made his first blood donation at the age of 17 after being inspired as a young boy by his father's commitment to giving back. Reed is now 72 — and that first donation was 55 years ago. Reed recently made his 480th blood donation — and brought his lifelong total to more than 60 gallons. The milestone held deep personal meaning for Reed because it took place on what would have been his late father's 100th birthday. "This would have been my father's 100th birthday. So today's really special to me for both reasons," Reed said. "I have reached this plateau and I feel like dad's probably watching me. I'm pretty proud because he was really excited when I donated the first time ever after I went away to college." Reed's donations are extra special because he has CMV-negative blood — a rare status that makes his donations crucial for life-saving surgeries on infants and newborns. And he's not done yet. Reed is committed to donating as long as his health allows.

Over the last 30 years, Rachid Lazraq has been running a specialty shoe store in East London called Rich Collection Italia. As his customers have gotten older and as online shopping has gotten more popular, Rachid has endured bumpy times in the business — and was ready to close up shop for good. Everything flipped overnight, though, when his daughter posted a TikTok video featuring the shop's vintage Y2K kitten heels — a pair she realized would appeal directly to younger shoppers. The video racked up 300,000 views in hours — and business boomed at Rich Collection Italia. People were lined up down the street outside the shop, with many potential customers waiting for two hours just to get inside. Thanks to a simple social media post, the shop got a boost from a whole new, younger clientele. The ultimate payoff came when Rachid tore down his closing sign to applause from a crowd of waiting customers.

An 11-year-old girl battling leukemia turned her hospital room window into a menu — and local restaurants answered the call in a big way. Emmalee Wilkins, currently being treated at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, taped handmade posters to her window asking for pizza and doughnuts. Once photos of her signs hit social media, local hot spots like Snappy Tomato Pizza, Abby Girl Sweets, and Bourbon House Pizza rushed to deliver fresh pies, cupcakes, and encouragement directly to her floor. Some of the deliveries caught Emmalee completely by surprise. When asked how it felt knowing complete strangers had seen her signs and wanted to help, her answer was simple. "It makes you feel good," adding, "Can you tell everybody thanks?"

On the Fourth of July, near San Francisco, a small dog named Prieta was spooked by the noise from fireworks and escaped her family home. Since then, the family had been worried about finding their pup. Last week, there was a break in the case. Someone in the San Francisco Bay area called 911 to report that a small dog had run into the bay and "just kept swimming." Firefighters responded to the call. They used a drone to locate the dog. They then launched a boat into the Bay — and plucked the dog out of the water. Sure enough. It was Prieta. The Fire Department connected Prieta with her family and shared the story of her rescue and return on social media. The fire department wrote, “Firefighter Tyler, who scooped up Prieta from the Bay in one perfectly timed move, was able to see her dry and much happier now in her owner’s arms. Prieta’s owner was emotional as she expressed her gratitude to all the rescuers who helped bring her beloved dog home after an especially difficult time in her life.”

For months, a toddler named Marlo in San Diego, California, has been sitting in front of his house every Wednesday morning, waiting for the trash to be picked up. Marlo is just thrilled by the sights and sounds of the massive machine that moves through his neighborhood once a week. Last Wednesday was a big day for Marlo as the driver of the truck, Roberto, stopped in front of Marlo's house, got out of the truck — and met Marlo in person. The truck driver didn't just greet the toddler. Instead, he brought a gift — of a miniature toy garbage dumpster. The heartwarming gesture is sure to strengthen the bond Marlo has with Roberto and his truck. And, Marlo will very likely be out on his front lawn, every Wednesday, for weeks to come.

Earlier this month, a 14-year-old Montana teenager used his ranching skills for an incredible rescue, using a lasso to pull a drowning man from the fast-moving Yellowstone River. Jory Thomas was camping with his family when a raft and paddleboard collided with a bridge pillar, sending four people into the water. While three made it to shore, one man was left drifting downstream while clinging to a cooler. Jory sprang into action. He ran along the riverbank with a 12-foot lariat — a rodeo rope he brought to the campground to get some extra practice. Every day for months, he had been roping cattle dummies. All that hard work paid off as Jory threw his lariat and snagged the man on his very first attempt. He then hauled the swimmer through chest-deep water to safety, where first responders took over. His grandmother, Sandy Thomas, was thrilled everyone was safe after the adventure — but wasn't surprised that Jory stepped up without hesitation. As she explained, "His first instinct always is to help other people. He's always been that way. The whole community is proud of him. We've had a lot of feedback, but that's Jory. He's always there to help somebody else.”

About 20 years ago, a Corvette sports car enthusiast named Joe was devastated when his wife passed away unexpectedly. At the time, the couple owned a 1990 C4 Corvette, which they enjoyed riding and driving together. When Joe's wife died, he put the rare six-speed, V8 Corvette in a barn — and left it alone. Recently, a team of mechanics and auto detailers at the YouTube channel WD Detailing learned about the car in the barn — and learned how special the car was to Joe. They stepped in to bring the muscle car back to life as a gift to Joe. The detailers spent days tackling 20 years' worth of grime, rodent nests, and baked-in dirt. After deep-cleaning the interior, polishing the paint, and flushing out stale gas, mechanic Adam threw in a fresh battery and fired it up. The engine roared back to life on the very first try — even shooting four chicken eggs out of the exhaust pipe left behind by a former animal tenant. When the mechanics finally revealed the fully restored vehicle to Joe, he heard the familiar engine growl before he even saw the car and was immediately brought to tears. Smiling through the emotion, he spent the afternoon sharing fond memories of his wife, celebrating the return of the closest thing he had left to driving alongside her.

Dave Whitlow, a 73-year-old retired local government manager in Virginia, spends his Tuesdays and Thursdays working the best gig of his life — serving as a volunteer cuddler in the neonatal intensive care unit at Children's Hospital of Richmond. For the past eight years, Dave has shown up to hold, rock, and comfort some of the hospital's most fragile patients. On a typical shift, he cradles five to eight premature or critically ill infants — some weighing under two pounds — giving them the human connection and comfort they need while they fight for their lives. Dave works closely with the nursing staff, carefully tracking the babies' vital signs and monitoring their progress during every single cuddle. Before placing each infant back into their bed, Dave quietly whispers the same heartfelt wish to them: "Grow strong, grow smart, grow kind." Dave is happy he has the extra time in retirement to do this important job. "It's the best gig I've ever had. It just feels right. I pretty much just want to be with them," he said.

Hannah Bomback, a seventh-grade teacher in Burton, Ohio, noticed that one of her students, Arieauna Johnson, was frequently missing class — and learned that Arieauna's mom, Melissa Johnson, was dealing with a serious kidney problem. Hannah had also taught Melissa's four older children and wanted to help the family any way she could, so she stepped up and donated a kidney. While Hannah wasn't a direct match, her donation to a stranger through the National Kidney Registry generated a priority voucher. This amazing golden ticket bumped Melissa to the top of the active waiting list for a living donor, giving Melissa a real shot at getting her life back. Hannah says the transplant process went smoothly and is happy that Melissa and her family are getting a boost. Hannah admits that she also got a boost. As she explained, "When you give to other people, your life is made so much better. It feels weird because I personally have gotten so much joy out of it. I've benefited so much."

A couple weeks ago, the charity group Wesley Family Services in Pennsylvania was facing some tough times. They were on the brink of shutting down its "Open Your Heart to a Senior" program because of a loss of federal funding — which left local senior citizens worried about how they would get their groceries. The news startled local resident Diana Holcomb, who relied on the services provided by the program. Diana shared her story with a local TV station to make sure the community knew about the crisis. Her emotional plea struck a major chord in the community — and inspired an anonymous donor to step forward with $100,000 to fund the food program for another full year. When Diana learned the news, she was overwhelmed with emotion. "Wow, somebody out there cares," she said. "It brought me to tears. I just thanked the Lord for working this out."

An off-duty firefighter from Texas was out on the lake over the Fourth of July weekend when a boat carrying nine people capsized. He didn't hesitate. He repeatedly dove under the overturned boat and pulled three children out from underneath it. One of the kids wasn't breathing when he got her out. He performed CPR right there on the spot until she came back around. All three children survived without major injuries. That's the definition of being in the right place at the right time — and actually being prepared for it. That firefighter had a pretty remarkable Fourth of July.

An 82-year-old North Carolina woman is being called a living miracle after surviving nine days trapped in her bathtub. Joan Rivet fell while getting ready for bed, injured her back, and was unable to climb out. With her phone out of reach and no one nearby to hear her calls, she spent more than a week alone in the tub. To stay alive, Rivet came up with a remarkable solution: she used her foot to turn on the faucet and splashed water toward her face so she could drink. She says her faith helped her endure the pain and isolation, and she never gave up hope of being rescued. The breakthrough came when her brother, who calls her every week, became concerned after several unanswered calls. He requested a welfare check, and deputies found Rivet semi-conscious in her bathtub. She was hospitalized for dehydration and other complications but is now recovering through physical therapy. Despite the ordeal, Rivet remains optimistic, saying she’s grateful for simple comforts like food, water, and a warm shower. Her story is inspiring neighbors to check in more often on people who live alone — and serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of hope, determination, and community.

Not all of the big World Cup stories are happening on the pitch. An England fan and his grandpa are making headlines, too. 21-year-old Jacob Allmendinger from East Yorkshire, England, spent his entire savings — about $13,000 — to take his 80-year-old grandfather, Geoff Golliker, on what he called the trip of a lifetime to the World Cup in the U.S. and Mexico. Their journey gained attention on social media, where people were touched by Jacob’s decision to prioritize time with his grandfather over saving for a home. Among those who saw the story was an online company that offered to reimburse the money if England beat Panama by two goals. To Jacob’s surprise, the company followed through and deposited the funds into his account. Jacob says he was shocked when he checked his bank balance and saw the money had actually arrived. He now plans to put the funds back into savings, potentially reviving his dream of buying a house. But for Jacob, the biggest reward has been the memories. He says he and his grandfather are more like best friends than granddad and grandson, and the overwhelming response from people who miss their own grandparents has made the trip even more meaningful.

A group of neighbors in England is being praised after risking their lives to rescue an 87-year-old woman from a house fire. Phyllis Day was asleep in her home when flames broke out late at night. Because she has Alzheimer’s disease and had removed her hearing aids before going to bed, she never heard the smoke alarms. Neighbors spotted the fire just before 11:30 p.m. and immediately tried to get inside while firefighters were on the way. At the same time, Day’s daughter, Suzanne Wright, was watching the emergency unfold through a doorbell camera and used the system’s two-way intercom to help guide neighbors into the house. Two of those neighbors, 28-year-old Pav Sarpal and 44-year-old Stephan Smart, rushed upstairs through heavy smoke in a desperate search for the trapped woman. They eventually found Day asleep in her bedroom, woke her up, and carefully guided her to safety. Wright says there’s no question the neighbors saved her mother’s life, adding that the experience restored her faith in people. She called the rescuers heroes and said complete strangers were willing to risk everything to help someone they barely knew.

An 11-year-old Kentucky boy named Avory Woolery is an amazing kid, and here's why. Avery noticed an unconscious man at the bottom of an apartment complex swimming pool in Lexington and realized no one else was doing anything to help. So, he put on his goggles, dove in, and pulled the man to the surface all by himself. Once out of the water, the man's friend began CPR while another bystander called 911. The man was taken to a hospital in serious condition. Avory told reporters, "I grabbed him up and I just felt really bad because there was no way that I was going to let another man die today. He's a human being. He should be treated as such." Avory's father, Sean Woolery, said he could not be prouder of his son's courage saying, "I'm proud of him. Somebody, when I was walking up here, somebody said, 'Thank you. You taught him how to swim.'"

A Phoenix police officer is being praised for turning a disappointment into an unforgettable day for more than 100 students. When funding fell through for an end-of-summer field trip at Greenway Middle School, School Resource Officer Sean Reavie stepped in and personally paid to rent an entire movie theater for 144 students in the school’s summer program. They got a private screening of Toy Story 5, and Reavie also covered popcorn, candy, and drinks. For many of the seventh and eighth graders, it was their very first trip to a movie theater. Reavie says he didn’t want to break a promise made to the kids, especially since many come from families facing financial hardships. The theater outing cost about $2,000, but he says the experience was worth every penny. The veteran officer has a long history of helping local children. Last year, he spent more than $3,000 of his own money to take students to a water park and also runs a nonprofit called Put On The Cape: A Foundation For Hope. A New York entrepreneur is getting a lot of attention for turning his success into inspiration for others. John Cronin, a business owner with Down syndrome, has officially opened the first retail store for his company, John’s Crazy Socks, in Huntington, New York. The storefront comes about a decade after he launched the business with a mission to spread happiness and show what people with differing abilities can achieve. Surrounded by family and friends at a ribbon‑cutting ceremony, Cronin celebrated the new shop as a place that reflects his personality — creative, colorful, and fun. The store marks a big step forward for the company, which started small and has grown into a widely recognized brand, known not just for its products but for its message of inclusion and opportunity. Cronin’s story is being highlighted as an example of how determination and community support can help break barriers, while bringing a little more joy into the world, one pair of socks at a time.
