celebration. Speeches were being made, heartfelt tributes were flowing… and yet, people 
were talking. Loudly. Mid-speech. 


It’s something that happens way too often: weddings, birthdays, funerals someone is 
pouring their heart out and there’s always that table at the back, laughing or chatting like 
it’s halftime at a braai. 


Is it bad manners? Are we just too casual as South Africans? Or are speeches too long
