A listener says she was visiting a friend over the weekend when her friend’s child asked to borrow her phone to play games. She handed it over, but while playing, the child dropped the phone and smashed the screen.

She took her iPhone 16 to Vodacom and was quoted R7,000 for a screen replacement. But now there’s a problem: her friend refuses to pay, saying she believes it’s actually the listener’s fault for handing the child the phone in the first place.

So, where does the responsibility fall? Is it on the parent because their child damaged someone else’s property, or did the listener accept the risk by giving the child her phone?
