Should schools and varsities actually pay students who play sport?

On one hand, these athletes are putting in serious hours, training, travelling, competing and in many cases, they’re the reason schools and universities gain exposure, prestige, and even sponsorships. At big institutions, sport isn’t just extracurricular… it’s a whole brand. So the question is: if everyone else is benefiting, why shouldn’t the players?

But on the flip side, student-athletes already receive scholarships, access to facilities, education, and opportunities that many others don’t. Paying them could blur the line between amateur and professional sport, and potentially create inequality between different sports and athletes.

So where do you draw the line? Is this about fairness and recognising talent… or does it risk turning school sport into a business?
