Dear Ted and Amy,

I am newly engaged and I know that you’ve had GTT letters about bridesmaids that can’t afford to do their part for the wedding. I have a similar issue but this time, I’m trying to avoid any drama by NOT inviting her to be in my wedding party in the first place. In college, I was very tight with a group of four other women. We’ve remained close since graduating and when I got engaged, my first thought was that I wanted to have all of them as my bridesmaids. But one is AWFUL with money. She makes a pretty good living but has constantly been broke due to bad decisions made since our friendship began. In fact, we always kind of joke about it with her when we cover her costs. If I bring it up, she claims I’m looking down at her for being poor. But it’s one thing when she can’t afford a ten dollar martini and we have to pay for it. It’s another thing when it’s going to be her entire share of being in a wedding party which I am totally seeing is going to happen. So, I’ve decided to invite the others in our group to be part of my wedding party and leave her out but to tell her why. I texted her this entire reason as to why I’m not including her and she is now not speaking to me and says she will not come to the wedding. How should I have handled it differently if you think I handled it wrong? Or should I just stick to my guns and hope she gets over it?
