Dear Ted and Amy,
My husband and I have three children together and our middle child has ADHD. We have two very different parenting styles and lately with our son we have been struggling. Our son is six years old and been having a lot of tantrums lately. He hits, screams, and throws toys. He goes to behavioral therapy every week and we recently started him on medication. I have my degree in early childhood education and I tend to be far more of the “gentler “parent when things get rough with our son. I offer different calm down methods and when they don’t work I sit and let him have his tantrum and when he’s through, I talk to him. My husband on the other hand has a short fuse and after “trying” to calm him down will resort to yelling, threatening to take things away and yes, I hate to even say it but spanking. We have had many arguments about the best way to handle our son’s tantrums. My husband thinks that the only way our son will listen is by being more assertive. I disagree with that because it’s a medical condition and his brain operates differently. I’m worried about lasting trauma on our child with his fear conditioning. I just don’t know how to get my husband and I on the same page. His argument is that this is how he was raised and he turned out fine. Sometimes talking to him is like talking to a brick wall. How can I get my husband and I on the same page to be the best parents we can be for not just our son but our other two children as well.
Signed,
