Dear Ted and Amy,
I inadvertently found out something about my dad that I wasn’t supposed to know. He’s been quietly loaning money to my older brother for over a year. Like a lot. Not just to help cover the groceries every so often. My parents don’t have a lot of extra income and he asked me not to tell my mom. He seems to think my brother is going to get back on his feet soon and he’ll repay it and she’ll never know. But now my mom is making comments about how they are having to cut back because of the economy – not make house repairs or go out to dinner anymore – because Dad tells her there’s just not enough money to do that right now. I feel stuck in the middle. If I say nothing, I feel disloyal to my mom. If I tell her, I blow up my dad’s trust and probably my brother’s situation too. Do I say something and if so to who?
Signed,
