It's Group Therapy Thursday time!

Hi Ted and Amy,
I need some advice on what turned into a super awkward situation. A good friend of ours has 80 acres of heavily wooded property. He told us, “Come up and get as much wood as you need for the winter.” We were SO relieved — money is tight, and knowing we’d have firewood without spending a ton felt like a huge blessing. So we go up there this weekend, load up the truck, then stop to chat before heading out. While we’re talking, his wife starts counting how much wood we have… and then tells us how much we owe. We were completely shocked. We honestly thought it was being offered to us. We didn’t argue as we weren’t about to unload all that wood. Now we’re sitting here wondering:

Did we mess up thinking it was free?

Do we pay even though that’s not what was said?

What would you do?
