It's Group Therapy Thursday time!
Dear Ted and Amy,
I just recently got married and even though we live in Syracuse, neither one of us are from here. We’ve been pretty carefree in the past and have had no problem driving to another state to visit his family for the holiday. But in the last few years, we’ve acquired three cats, two dogs and five chickens. We had so much going on this year that I forgot to line up a pet sitter for the holiday week and, not hard to believe, it’s tough to find one at this late notice. I recommended that we just stay home and create new traditions, considering that we just spent a lot of time with his family over the summer for our wedding. My husband is vehemently against it and says his parents will be devastated if we don’t drive the ten hours home. I told him that he could go and I would stay home with the pets, thinking that he would never think about doing it on our first Christmas together. He says we either have to find a way to bring the pets with us, or yes, he’ll head home for a couple of days without me. Am I wrong to feel pretty hurt about this situation? I get that his mom will be sad but wouldn’t now as a newly married couple, be the time to break the cord?
Signed,
Holiday Solo in Syracuse
