A tropical cyclone system is strengthening off Queensland's northern coast with a high chance of becoming Category 1 Cyclone Koji by evening. Communities from Port Douglas to Airlie Beach, including Cairns and Townsville, are under warning with damaging winds up to 100 kilometres per hour expected and threats of life-threatening flash flooding. Emergency services have deployed 92 additional police and 35 state emergency services personnel to the affected areas.

A 58-year-old fugitive named Kenneth Giles is being sought by police in Western Australia's Midwest region after allegedly shooting his partner two days ago. Police have seized 16 firearms he had access to despite not holding a gun licence. Investigators are tracking his mobile phone location and searching for his ute, with authorities stating they do not believe anyone is harbouring him.
