A brave neighbour who charged into a burning home in Ellenbrook to save a 4 year old boy says he's not a hero. The 25 year old is tonight being praised for his actions and has told 7News he'd do it again in a heartbeat.

For more, James Carmody reports.

Children screams sound the alarm.

I chomped the fence to the back door, where I found the owner of the house. She tried to help her out, but she was screaming, saying that her kid was the stall inside.

Minutes ticked by as he tried desperately to get inside.

The mum was screaming. The little boy was screaming at the start, but then he kind of went quiet, So it was a bit terrifying. So we knew we had to get him out as quick as possible.

With another allen Brook neighbor wielding an axe, they got the door down, faced with a wall of black smoke and flames licking the walls. Johan barefoot ran straight in.

I only thought was just fine the kid and get him out. That was the only thing.

Tell me about when you got to it.

It was cooling across the floor. Found turning to bend and saw his leg and just grabbed it and just yanked him. And I was just going backwards with him between my legs, trying to get him just out of the house as quick as I possibly could. So I was so happy that he was still. We got him out. We found at he was.

Breathing police arrived minutes later, fire trucks getting there twenty minutes after the smoke started.

Just get good, let him.

It's understood that young child was stuck in the front room here where you can still see a kid's race car bed, burnt and charred. After neighbors rescued the child, they turned their attention to the garage, prying the door open just long enough so that a dog could run out to safety. It's believed one pet cat died in the fire, while two others are unaccounted for.

Very heroic by the residents to provide assistance, but obviously an element of caution in terms of entering structure fires.

A four year old was treated for minor injuries, and Johan too for burns to his hands and feet. You feel like a hero today, Johanan though.

Just I'll do the same with a heartbeat if a situation popped up again. So what everyone else?
