The Wagner Group, Russia’s unofficial mercenary group, has increased its presence in Ukraine from 1,000 to 20,000 people.

British officials have reported an increase in Mr Putin's reliance on these mercenaries to promote his cause in Ukraine.

Russian foreign and security policy at the Australian National University Associate Professor Matthew Sussex told 6PR Mornings members of the group are often ex-criminals who carry out the most violent acts.
