Australian honey producers have won a five-year trademark battle in Britain amid a long-running dispute with New Zealand over who can claim the term “manuka honey”.

New Zealand has been trying to block Australia from using the term in overseas markets, arguing it's a Maori word.

Chairman of the Australian Manuka Association Paul Callander, told 6PR Mornings while it's a positive outcome, the battle has been costly.

"It's been funded primarily by the industry and its members, and a dedicated team of people that saw we had to fight this group legitimately," Mr Callander said.
