Indonesia has for weeks been transfixed by a corruption scandal involving provincial governor Lukas Enembe, who is accused of spending at least $56 million in foreign casinos despite an official salary of less than $1,000 per month.
The scandal has now spread to Australia, where Indonesian investigators confirmed they were examining transactions at Crown Casino in Perth and suspicious bank deposits in Perth and Melbourne.
Thomson Reuters Asia Pacific financial crime expert Nathan Lynch spoke to Liam Bartlett on 6PR Mornings about the developments.
"These are extraordinary allegations... we're talking about significant amounts of money here... despite the allegations, people are supporting him and preventing police from getting to him," Lynch said.
