There have been calls on World No Tobacco Day for Australia to revive its national anti-smoking advertising campaign to convince people to quit the habit.

Cancer Council tobacco issues committee chair Libby Jardine said, despite tobacco use dropping in recent times across Australia, it is still the leading preventable cause of cancer across the nation, and on track to cause "one billion deaths" worldwide this century.

"The good thing about media campaigns is that they prompt smokers to quit, they stop young people from taking it up, and they really denormalise smoking ... they're a very effective tobacco control intervention," Jardine told Liam Bartlett on 6PR Mornings.
