Hollywood stalwart Bruce Willis is stepping away from acting after a diagnosis of aphasia, a condition that causes loss of the ability to understand or express speech, his family announced.

US correspondent Michael Genovese told Gareth Parker on 6PR Breakfast the news had taken Hollywood by surprise.

"We don't know how far along he is with this condition ... but the statement from his family says he was recently diagnosed," Genovese said.
