Peter Matera needs one more stent in his heart before the West Coast champion can leave hospital after suffering a heart attack at his property on Sunday.

Brother Phil told Gareth Parker on 6PR Breakfast his brother was up and about and eager to leave hospital but required one more minor operation after suffering the attack while chopping wood at home in Moama near the NSW-Victoria border.

"He's been farming for a few years so he hasn't been exercising as much as he should be," Phil told Parker.
