Optus customers who have had their data stolen face a nervous wait after the alleged hacker responsible released 10,000 records online and threatened to do it again over the next four days.

University of NSW Institute Cyber Security Enterprise director Nigel Phair says the whereabouts of the criminal responsible could be anywhere after the data was released on the dark web.

"Even if they can identify the hacker, they still might not be brought to justice," he told Breakfast hosts Oly Peterson and Jenna Clark, in for Gareth Parker this week.
