The Socceroos defied the odds by advancing to the last 16 at the FIFA World Cup, upsetting world number 10 Denmark 1-nil in their final group stage match and emulating the golden era team of 2006.

It is the first time the Socceroos have won two matches at a World Cup tournament and they next take on Argentina in the last 16, with Wide World of Sports commentator Sam McClure telling 6PR Breakfast hosts Millsy & Karl no one at the stadium could quite believe the result.

"You've been copping a barrage over here as well Karl, but in fairness to you, not many people gave them a chance," McClure said in reference to Karl's prediction the Socceroos wouldn't score a goal the entire tournament.

"We've actually done better than what the 2006 team done, we've won 2 out of 3 games."
