AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan is set to step away from the game’s top job after eight years.

The longtime league executive had signalled his intention to resign as CEO before the pandemic but gave chairman Richard Goyder his assurance he would stay on to help rebuild the competition.

6PR Breakfast host Gareth Parker said although 'there had missteps along the way', the CEO was able to keep the AFL and its stakeholders afloat despite two years of turmoil and many unknowns, from border closures, staff cuts and floating fixtures.

"He has done a good job, especially navigating the extraordinary pandemic situation over the past two years," Parker said.
