Incumbent Mayor Mark Sutcliffe has unveiled new platforms on interprovincial free trade in the Ottawa-Gatineau Region, while also advocating for more direct flights to Ottawa. Last week, he proposed a $10 billion plan to fix and expand the City of Ottawa’s roads, sewer infrastructure, and city facilities. Finding that type of cash over a 10-year period isn’t going to be easy, as the municipality currently faces a 10-year infrastructure funding gap of $10.8 billion. Halfway through this year, the City of Ottawa was facing a year-to-date operating deficit of $38.59 million, even though City Staff projected a year-end surplus of $11.16 million. Sutcliffe says the plan will be funded using a combination of tax revenue, development charges, budget savings, and ‘underutilized debt capacity’. Is the Math adding up? Are we kicking this can down the road? Sutcliffe joins Kristy Cameron on Ottawa Now.
