Bruyere Health is laying off 55 frontline health workers, according to the Canadian Union of Public Employees. It says the cuts will include 46 personal support workers and 9 nurses. Back in October, Ontario’s Financial Accountability Officer projected a reduction in 9,000 nursing and PSW positions by 2027-2028, which are largely based around the Ford government’s spending plan. CUPE estimates that 725 of those jobs would be eliminated in Ottawa, including the cuts at Bruyere. So how soon will these cuts happen, and where will the pain be felt the most? Sticking with municipal matters, residents and business owners on Woodroffe Avenue are about to go through another construction gauntlet. At the end of March, Woodroffe between Richmond Road and Deschênes Street will be shut down, cutting off one of the entrances to a nearby plaza. It will stay that way as we head towards the Fall. And, as expected, heads are rolling. We check in with Alaa Kiki, the owner of Kiki Barber Shop on Richmond Road.
