This morning on 5 Breakfast, we’re getting into a new SABC1 documentary series called Born After The Fire. The series marks the 50th anniversary of the Soweto Uprisings by looking at South Africa through the eyes of the generation born into democracy - the young people who inherited the freedom others fought for, but are still living with the unanswered questions around education, unemployment, leadership, opportunity and equality.
Across 13 weeks, Born After The Fire uses June 16 as both a historical anchor and a mirror for the present. Each episode connects the legacy of 1976 to the issues shaping South Africa now: education, employment, entrepreneurship, social justice, technology, health, arts and culture, identity and nation-building.
What makes the series powerful is that it is not just looking back. It is asking whether the dreams of the young people who marched for freedom have actually been realised, and what responsibility this generation now has in shaping the next 50 years of South Africa.
