Doctors are warning that a plan by the Federal Government to let patients bypass their GP to get a specialist referral could lead to a US-style health system and longer waits for specialities in high demand. Under the proposed changes, patients would be able to get a referral from other medical professionals, including physiotherapists and midwives, without needing to return to their doctor. It has been revealed that Australia’s delegation to the COP 29 Climate Summit in Ajerbizan, has totaled almost 100 Australian Government bureaucrats and nearly 500 attendees in total. The travel alone of Australia’s delegation will cost taxpayers more than one million dollars, and the $871,628 the Australia government spent on building its pavilion at the exhibition sees the total sale past $2 million. Treasurer Jim Chalmers has launched a bold new proposal designed to stop the closure of rural banks . There are a few Australians greater than Professor Richard Scolyer.  As co-director of the Melanoma Institute of Australia, he led the charge in creating immunotherapy, which is a treatment for deadly melanoma skin cancers, that supercharges the body’s immune system to destroy cancer cells. The treatment led to him being honoured as being one of the two Austrlaians of the year in 2024.  Everything changed after he was diagnosed with an incurable brain cancer in 2023.  Not going to accept the status quo, he chose to undertake a world-first experimental treatment based on melanoma science. Labor has promised to make 100,000 fee-free TAFE places available every year if re-elected. The move has been condemned by the opposition, who say the government has been secretive in not releasing graduation data, which they attribute to a high dropout rate among students. In other jurisdictions which have had the policy, the completion rates for some courses is as low as 1%. Australian premiers and chief ministers have endorsed age limits for social media, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announcing the cut off age will be 16. The search for missing Brumby activist in the Kosciuszko National Park Lovisa “Kiki” Sjoberg has entered day seven.  The 48-year-old was last seen driving a grey Mitsubishi Outlander in the national park at around 7 am Tuesday 15 October. Liberal National Party (LNP) Queensland leader David Crisafulli has claimed victory in the state election, ending an almost decade-long reign by Labor. The LNP has secured a majority, winning 49 seats — two more than the 47 needed for a majority, with Labor claiming 34 and 6 seats left in doubt.  A new film, The Great Emu War, is about to enter production starring comedy legends John Cleese and Rob Schneider. The Great Emu War was an Australian military operation undertaken in in 1932 to address public concern over the number of emus said to be destroying crops in the Wheatbelt of Western Australia.  The war resulted in armed Australian Artillery soldiers being deployed, who while killing many birds, failed to eradicate enough to stop the crop destruction. The Opposition has slammed the government's parliamentary inquiry into nuclear, saying it has been stacked with Labor and other pro-renewables MPs. Queenslanders are heading to the polls today in what's tipped to be a tighter election race than was initially predicted. Labor is vying for a fourth term under leader Steven Miles, while LNP leader David Crisafulli is hoping to end nearly a decade of his party in opposition. While Mr Crisafulli has shed some of the initial lead he held, the Coalition still leads Labor on two-party preferred 52.5% to 47.5%, after preferences are taken into account. Private Health Insurance companies are warning more than 75,000 NSW residents would be forced to drop private health cover if the state government hikes taxes on insurers.  Health Minister Ryan Park last week introduced legislation which would allow the government to increase the health insurance levy by almost 85 per cent following a stoush over the price insurers should pay for a private bed in public hospitals.  Luke Grant chats with Private Health Australia CEO, Dr Rachel David about modelling which says the tax would increase costs to almost $670 million over four years and force insurers to increase their premiums.
