Queensland’s Shark Control Program is under fire following the release of a major independent review by the Envoy Foundation. The report claims the program is relying too heavily on traditional shark fishing methods, despite years of scientific criticism and recommendations for reform.

According to the review, 87 per cent of beaches in the program still rely on a single method — shark fishing. While the report also alleges a record number of marine animals were caught last year, including whales, dolphins and turtles. The Foundation is now calling for a transition to what it describes as a modern, technology-led approach focused on non-lethal shark mitigation methods…
