Joining me. I think I've got her on the line now. The Senator for the Northern Territory, the COLP Senator Just Center Nampa, jimper Price, good morning to you.
Oh, good morning Katie, Good morning to your listen.
I'm glad we've got oh better late than never. I apologize for our tech issues. It's good to have you on the show now, Senator. Obviously, the election called early this morning, following on from Peter Dutton delivering his budget reply speech overnight. What's in that budget for the Northern Territory?
Oh, look, aside, the Labor government have failed to deliver for the Northern Territory as we've seen. Basically they've only budgeted for two hundred and fifty million dollars in extra funds and that's to go toward road upgrades. So look, we as the Coalition understand that all Australia's doing it tough, especially Territorians. We know that we've got vast tracts of land to cover and I've been up down the track with our candidate for Lingiari Lisa Siebert, and for us, we want to bring a welcome relief in terms of cost of living to territoriums, so things like with the foot with mule excites basically in Dallett the moment, the current average price for petrol is about one hundred and eighty two cents per liter. This would go down to one hundred and fifty seven cents. In our springs it's about two hundred and forty five cents, so we bring that down to two hundred and twenty so and this is going to be able to impact everybody, So everyone from mums and dads to pensioners, to business people to transport companies, and it's about reinvigorating our economy and bringing down inflation and that is going to help territorians more broadly. Now, we've got some wonderful announcements coming announcements in the weeks to come with regard to specific support and funding measures throughout the Northern Territory. But they will come in due course, all right.
I gave Luke Gosling a bit of a hard time, I guess you'd say, yesterday on the show because they didn't appear to be much in the Albanesi government's budget for the Northern territory. But just Sindra, I know there'll be people listening this morning, going well, it doesn't sound like there's much in the reply speech from the opposition either.
Look, as I said, we've got some great announcements that we're going to be making before the election is here. So we do have some measures specific for the Northern Territory that I know that will support territorians more broadly. But I mean, look, we can't say as territorians that we are better off after three years under the Albanese government. And sadly the current Federal Labor members of Solomon and Lingiari, and of course also in the Senate have demonstrated that they have been really quite weak and unhelpful in terms of representing territorians. I mean, we had to shame the Prime Minister to come back to Alice Springs when we were in the middle of a crime crisis, and even then he failed to deliver anything meaningful for Central Australia and the problem on the ground. And you know, we deserve a hell of a lot better in the Northern Territory than what we have had. I mean, it's sad to see the Member for Lingiari and her and her colleague in the Senate going around to communities basically spruiting nothing but sprooking jobs that already exist and suggesting, well really that they have nothing nothing for those in those communities, mister Gosling and Solomon hasn't been able to deliver on the ground. I mean, when it comes to defense right now, Labor has failed miserably and I would have thought that this was an area that our member for Solomon would have been stronger on. But we are certainly going to be taking a stronger position on that because our national sovereignty is important to us. Darwin is the gateway to Asia, and in terms of our defense spend, we'll hear an announcement with regard to that going towards the.
Selection the Senator. When you look at, you know, the situation with jobs, for example, in communities and opportunities for people in communities, what would you say the coalition's plan is in that space.
Yeah, Look, I mean I've been very vocal about this for some time now. You know, while Labor have basically extended their CDP program to October twenty twenty five, and we can see that in a budget it's budgeted for the next four years, that's a broken promise right there. To overhaul and reply that program. But we are serious about, you know, not just ratcheting up welfare, but actually getting people away from welfare. And if I have the opportunity to become a Minister for Indigenous Affairs in the Northern Territory, you can absolutely bet on the fact that I will be looking at reforms when it comes to Native Title and the Land Rights Act in the Northern Territory because we need to stop this double standards going on in Australia. We're in remote communities. Aboriginal people are living in socialists enclaves, dependent on welfare, cannot utilize their land for economic purposes, cannot become entrepreneurs in their own right and job creators. But believe me, you I've got big plans in this space, not just to support traditional owners on their own land to become economically independent and job creators, but to also ensure that we are attracting investment back to the Northern Territory and getting industry back on its feet. We need to rebuild our economy. We have the worst performing economy in the country and you know the Northern Territory government is doing it tough. They've had to deliver a tough message to Territorians that they're not going to be able to fund everything that we need because of the condition of the budget that the previous Territory Labor government left it in. So we have to be able to work hand in hand with the Territory government to continue to improve the situation for Territorians. And that's what's really important that we get Lisa Baylis into Solomon and Lisa sive It into Lingyari Senator.
One of the areas that Peter Dutton did focus on, obviously in that budget reply speech as well was gas. Now that's an area for us here in the Northern Territory where you know we have got we've got gas, it's ready to go, but things have certainly been delayed for a long long time. I mean, how is the coalition first off, I guess going to deliver cheaper energy, but how do our gas res serves play a part in that for the rest of the country from your perspective.
Yeah, Look, in terms of gas production in the Northern Territory, those that you have that you don't have to worry about that being sent away. Part of that will also form the gas that will stay within our country for the benefit of our energy and reducing our energy costs. But look, we also want to reduce red tape, reduce regulation, ensure that we're fast tracking the Middle Arm Precinct to get that up and running finally, as well as the Beterloo I mean, is it is just it's almost criminal that these projects have been delayed for such a long time and the Albanezi government has shut down, you know when it's come to our resources industry as shut projects down right around our country and health projects up. We don't want to get in the way anymore anymore. We want to work, as I said, hand in hand with leaders from Piero and her government to ensure that we're pumping gas and who's got to pump baby pump and get it going to the benefit of not just the Northern Territory but our entire nation, and the territory can be leading the way in that.
I mean, what about there was discussion from Peter Dutton about nuclear. He seems to have pulled that back a little bit in you know, like last night in that budget reply speech. You know, I think that there are still people in the end they're a bit worried about nuclear. What would you say to them.
Oh, look, what I would say is that we are absolutely invested in nuclear and in the interim, gas is going to be a huge part of that picture, because in the interim we want to ensure that we're lowering prices immediately, not further down the track. And look nuclear in terms of its technology. There's still a lot of stigma around in terms of nuclear, but there is a lot of information online. Now I think it's Australians for nuclear, but we are pretty much of the world's twenty largest economies, Australia is the only one not using or moving toward the use of Well, we're moving toward it now if we win government. But basically, it is safe. It's been demonstrated throughout nations right around the world that it is safe, that it is the cleanest, lowest emission energy available and completely and utterly reliable. So we are we will be transitioning through to nuclear, but there will have to be an energy mix involving absolutely gas and renewables will continue to exist.
Obviously, Now, before I let you go, I know that the other thing that obviously was part of part of that pitch last night in terms of the budget reply, but also continues to be is Peter Dunton saying that he's going to double down on those plans to cut migration and restrict foreign investors in an effort to try and make housing in Australia more affordable. How that worked, though, I expose for a place like the Northern Territory where we do rely on that migration to some degree in terms of you know, filling different different jobs that we can't get locals into.
Yeah, look, it's about getting the balance right and you know, being a cenator for the Northern Territory, I completely understand the needs. So in terms of migration, we will be ensuring that you know, the place as well, not just in Northern Territory, but regional Australia relies on the migrant community absolutely in terms of those people that contribute to our economy and our needs. So that's not something that we're looking to impact negatively. We want to make sure we get that balance right and the territory is absolutely in front of mind of our leadership with regard to that. And let me just say also that crime, I know is a huge it's still a huge issue, not just in the Northern Territory, but around the country and community safety is a huge issue and part of what we want to do is part of the coalition is established a task to push back on anti Semitism, but we also want to create tuper bail laws to stop DV offenders and create a national uniform nice laws as well. There's so much that we want to be able to do to ensure community safety and deal with crime appropriately and to support our communities broadly well.
Just center number, jimper Price, Senator for the Northern Territory, the COLP Senator for the Northern Territory. We are going to have to leave it there, but I've no doubt I'll talk to you again over the next five weeks.
Looking forward to it.
Thank you, thanks so much for your time this morning.
