We know that. Yesterday in the local news we'd heard about a truck fireing Catherine. That fire started in a set of brakes, as we understand it, spreading to a trailer. The driver managed to unhitch that trailer from the cabin, escaping unharmed. But by the time I got off air, we learned that the fire had impacted a number of local businesses, some of them with goods being transported. One damage on the main street as well of Catherine. As we understand it now, one of the businesses that was impacted is owned by my dear friend and former producer, a name and a voice that I know you'll all recognize. Now broad again. Good morning, now, Jesus, it's been a while since you've been in the studio window. I'm actually never how funny you know, I like to have you back in here.
I know it's a beautiful studio, isn't it. Carpet on the used to have no dogs pewing under my desk like we used to have no Maddy Hepworth.
Yeah, fun time, we certainly did now look Unfortunately, yes, Dida, a pretty ordinary situation for you. You had fifteen thousand copies of the new Territory Savvy Kids magazine on the back of that truck when these fires started in Catherine. What was your reaction when you found out what had happened.
Well, I was pretty pumped. Yesterday.
I was excited because delivery days always exciting, you know. We everyone's waiting for the magazine to arrive. So I had rung my printer in the morning and they were like, Yep, no delays, it's all good. Ten minutes later, I spoke to the transport company and they were like, oh, no, the trailer it's burnt to the ground.
And I'm like what So I actually thought it was a joke. I didn't. I thought it was a scam. I was like, no, no. Ten minutes ago I was told it was all good.
So yeah, unfortunately, you know, for their company as well, the poor trucking company lost their whole truck, everything that was on it, including our fifteen forty copies. I don't know why, but that was on my doc yeah slipp But yeah, unfortunately, the truck did have break problems and I think it caught on fire. But I spoke to Intersport Catherine yesterday because it actually happened within meters of their front door and their wall on their outside of their building has actually melted. So they have said that the police had told them yesterday, had it gone one more meter, their whole building would have been up and plays. So realistically, my fifteen thousand copies of the magazine, it is what it is. Thankfully, I thought it was the end of me. I thought, oh, like, I was a love project. I didn't earn any money from it. It was all about promoting local business and really talking up the territory's family life. I guess I was reading a lot on Facebook that mums were really unhappy about living here and raising their kids here.
So I thought, no, I've was born and bred here.
You know you've been here forever. We've both raised our kids here. It is an awesome place. So it was a bit of a love project to put a bit more positivity back in the community. It's a really cute magazine. We use local designer Brook from Studio b Design and her staff Stacey and Sofa, and they were amazing with getting it. It's bright, fun, colorful, bite size, perfect for little hands, schools, no parents to find out what to do, where to go, some free offers and deals and stuff like that in there, So it's just a positive.
A positive, Well, this is it.
I would have, mate, you would have been absolutely devastated when you found out and I spoke to you, you know, when I got off air and you said that You've been a bit of a mess yesterday morning, really upset as you would be. You know, you do these things off your own back to try and promote the Northern Territory. You and I have lived here for such a long time. You're a territory girl. But you know, even on this show, and you know from when you produced it, we hear so many different stories every single day. But the thing is, even despite those sad stories that we hear, you and I are so passionate about the Northern Territory, and I know that you love the place and you want to see it thrive.
Look, and you know, you know my story I'm going through, you know, trauma within my own family and life is is really really hard on many days of the week. But this is a project that keeps me busy, keeps me loving the territory, keeps me happy in life, keeps me It's completely like if anyone looked at it and go, yeah, that's not a business that's a hobby.
Because it doesn't pay me.
So my husband's like, go get a real job, which I think I'm going to have to go do soon. But anyway, that's another story. But yeah, look it is. It's a positive piece. We just I want you know, the government, the new government that have come in are really focusing on big business, but small business gets left behind. And it's you know, ninety nine percent of businesses in the territory are small business and they're all doing it tough. So we're just trying to put out you know, where to go, who to support, and thankfully, like our digital followers and our readers, they do they support these.
Guys and it's amazing. It's so cool when I hear these stories back.
And that's the whole point of me doing it right, is to try all of these guys that are you know, punching well above their weight in their industries or whatever, trying to deliver for territory families.
They're doing really good.
So well on the actual truck fire, do you know who else had Have they given you any detail about it?
I'm but I'm guessing one hundred percent.
I was told because the actual delivery was delayed, and they I was told yesterday the reason it was delayed is because they wait for the truck to be full.
So the truck was full.
So I can only assume that there's plenty of other businesses out there who lost stock.
It was only because, you know that I really knew about it.
Was because I was so excited that they were arriving and I was going out to distribute on myself yesterday that I was waiting and I had made a couple of phone calls to okay, we're ready, let's go, and then found out that they had actually burnt.
Yeah, poor buggers. I mean, you feel sorry.
For company as well, you know, And I, I mean, I was a mess.
I couldn't believe it. I thought I rang the Catherine Police. I was crying to them.
On the phone.
I was crying, crying to the trucking company, my poor printers.
I don't even know if you could understand what I was saying.
That was pretty much on my knees, going, oh my gosh, what have I done. I just got a phone from my mechanic to say my car is going to cost four grand.
Comes in threes. I got smashed again this afternoon so that's it. I'm done.
I'm like smiling, Oh you gotta smile, and absolutely you really do.
You're really just brutal, It truly is.
But it's you know, it's a beautiful life that we've got. Now, when when do you think these your magazines are now going to come back?
My printers were amazing. They I paid for a service where it was delivered, you know, door to door. So thankfully they cover all costs. They put in the insurance claim and they were back on the printing yesterday yep. So they will do it as fast as they can and they should be backing down within two weeks, so we'll be back out there and spreading all that.
Well, let us know when they are. I'd love to see it. And and as you see, you know, it's it is such a wonderful place to raise your kids. And I know that sometimes we will go through, you know, various different issues. I speak about them every single day on the show. But all you got to do, who is go to some of the different kids' sports in the afternoon, some of the other activities. You know, there's so much and there's so many great families.
So many free things to do for you. Yes, we don't realize how lucky we are. Free events, free you know, going to libraries or whatever that are putting on amazing shows and amazing activities. But yeah, just the you know, waterfront, aquas Park, acquisine, you know Crop Cove, all of those guys, they're unreal, So there is so we just need to keep pushing those guys so that you know, locals get out and support when they're bored and their kids are being rap bags, you need to get them at the house. Came and support these guys, which is on a daily basis for many people.
Good on your mel I'm so pleased to hear that everything's going to be okay. Thank you so much for having a chat with me this morning. Thanks, thank you,
