Kenyan athlete Brimin Misoi and Ethiopian star Workenesh Gurmesa ran the fastest ever marathons in Australia in the Sydney Marathon this morning.

A record field of 25,000 runners hit the streets from 6am, and after starting at North Sydney Oval, crossed Sydney Harbour Bridge and then wound through the city and eastern suburbs before finishing at the Opera House.

The Sydney marathon is entering its final year as a candidate to join the six biggest marathons - New York, Tokyo, Boston, Berlin, London and Chicago - and providing it meets the assessment criteria again on Sunday, a green light is expected in weeks.

Sydneysiders will have a new way to get to Europe by the end of the year, with a new airline flying directly from the city to tourist hotspots for the first time.

Turkish Airlines will fly from Sydney to Istanbul four times a week via Kuala Lumpur from December 5.

Australian rock lobster fishermen are growing increasingly frustrated and uncertain about lingering Chinese government trade restrictions, months after the federal government declared they were “very confident” the restrictions were on the brink of ending. 

In late 2020, China's customs agency blocked live rock lobsters from Australia – citing excessive levels of a heavy metal — as part of a wide-ranging campaign of trade coercion against the Morrison government.

The move crippled the crayfish industry, with Chinese exports accounting for 90% of its revenue. 

Beijing has since lifted the vast majority of those trade barriers, including hefty tariffs on barley and Australian wine, as Jim Chalmers is scheduled to become the first Australian treasurer to visit China in seven years.
