New book documents Beatles Historic first tour of Australia

View descriptionShare

This June marks 60 years since the Beatles first and only tour of Australia in 1964, at the height of the Beatlemania period.

The images of the band getting off the plane on a rainy day at Sydney airport, greeting the crowds on the balcony of Melborune’s Town Hall and the 300,000 thousand fans who swarmed the streets of Adelaide to greet them, after now seminal moments in Australia’s history.

The tour represented an extraordinary coming of age moment for the nation and the baby boomer generation, which as you’ll discover when you read the book, almost never happened.

It was also a major cultural turning point that put Australia on the map as a nation capable of hosting the biggest act the world had ever seen.

A new book, When We Was Fab: Inside The Beatles Australasian Tour 1964 presents the most well researched, beautifully assembled and entertaining account of the historic tour ever published.

Luke Grant chats with co-author, Beatles historian and radio host, Greg Armstrong, about how he managed to access never before seen photos and accounts, what the tour meant for Australia, the stories of those lucky enough to see the Fab Four live and why the Beatles popularity has transcended generations.
