Gauteng-A Tshwane employee and others has been arrested after being caught red handed trying to steal a transformer in Laudium in Pretoria West. The police were alerted by community members after they saw heavy duty trucks and a lot of people trying to load pieces of the transformer in the trucks. The South African National Civic Organisation in KwaZulu-Natal has overturned its decision to not supporting the ANC in the province. SANCO announced in June this year that it had parted ways with the ANC. It cited various reasons including the failure of the ANC to be accountable. Former EFF MP, Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane, and former KwaZulu-Natal Premier Willies Mchunu have officially joined the ranks of the uMkhonto WeSizwe Party. Advocate Mkhwebane is set to lead the party in Mpumalanga, while Mchunu, an ANC veteran, will take charge in KwaZulu-Natal. This announcement came during the party's media briefing. Meanwhile, the MK party has filed a second case alleging election fraud following a recent legal setback. The Limpopo government says its decision to dissolve the Thabazimbi Municipal Council follows failures by the institution to carry out its executive obligations. The municipality has been dysfunctional for several years, with court battles, infighting and parallel councils between DA and ANC led coalitions. After the 2021 local government elections, no party gained clear majority to govern on its own. The Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal has attributed the party's performance in yesterday's by-elections, to what it calls trust bestowed upon it by voters. The party won five wards in that province after contesting three wards in the Ethekwini municipality, one in the Umdoni Local Municipality and another in the KwaDukuza Local Municipality. Newcomers, the Umkhonto Wesizwe Party gained a ward from the African National Congress, in the Ray Nkonyeni local municipality, while the Inkatha Freedom Party retained its ward in the Nkandla local municipality. ActionSA has initiated legal proceedings against the Independent Electoral Commission, IEC over its alleged failure to probe a R150 million debt settlement involving the ANC. The IEC had earlier found no sufficient evidence to justify an investigation into the matter. In a separate move, ActionSA has also submitted new complaints to the IEC against the EFF and MK party, alleging that their campaign finance disclosures did not accurately reflect their election expenses. ActionSA has says it will be taking the IEC to court for its flip-flop stance in investigating the over 150 million rand Ezulweni debt settlement by the ANC. Party Chairperson Micheal Beaumont says that the party had requested the Electoral Commission to probe the matter based on the fact that the ANC had only 10 million rands in disclosures in the quarter under question, when the governing party in December 2023 announced the settlement.  The party has also initiated complaints against the EFF and MK Party with the IEC on the basis that the two parties' disclosures of donation received are not borne out by the substantial amounts obviously spent on their election campaigns.

The Secretary General of the African National Congress, Fikile Mbalula says the party's national working committee (NWC) descended on KwaZulu-Natal to meet with its structures after the party suffered a massive blow in the 2024 elections - losing its majority. Mbalula says they will do analysis of the party's performance after a significant loss in the province in the recent polls. 

Limpopo premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba says the provincial government has started the process to place the troubled Thabazimbi municipality under administration. This is due to ongoing political impasse. For more than two years, the municipality has had two parallel councils, DA and ANC led coalitions. Premier Dr Ramathuba was addressing the media on the outcomes of the special meeting of the provincial executive committee in Polokwane. It'll be the first municipality to be put under administration in the province since the previous local government elections. We spoke to Mec for Cooperative Governance, Basikopo Makamu

The Molopo Magistrate's Court in Mahikeng has transferred to the North West High Court, the case against Agnes Setshwantsho who is alleged to have killed her niece, Bonolo Modisaemang, in order to cash in on a life insurance policy worth R3-million. There is a strong police presence in the vicinity of the Pietermaritzburg Magistrates Court as MK party members march to court ahead of the appearance of an IEC official today. The official is believed to be appearing in connection with matters related to his conduct on election day last month, May 29th. MK party members who are part of this protest also continue to claim that the election results were rigged.  IEC Commissioner Dr Nomsa Masuku has been granted R20 000 bail by the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court sitting in the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court. Sixty-two-year-old Masuku was arrested on Friday by the Hawks for alleged fraud amounting to R1.2 million. For more on this, Sakina Kamwendo spoke to Police spokesperson, Colonel Katlego Mogale.

Charlotte Van Der Weshuizen, the wife of a child killer and former top cop Marius van der Westhuizen says she does not believe that the country needs another child murderer out in the public. This comes as her former husband and father to her kids, Marius is set to be released on parole at the end of July. The former cop was granted parole after his third appearance before the parole board at the Malmasbury Correctional Center on Tuesday. He murdered his children who were aged 16, five and 21 months at their home in 2006 to punish his wife, Charlotte. The IFP has won the highly contested by-elections in 3 of 6 wards in the Umzumbe Municipality ,near Port Shepstone, on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast. After the by-elections, the previously ANC controlled municipality is now a hung council, with the ANC and IFP both holding 17 seats. In by-elections in other KwaZulu-Natal municipalities, the IFP took a ward from AbantoBathu Congress in the Umvoti municipality, and it took a ward from the ANC at Mthonjaneni. In Newcastle the DA won a ward from the ANC, and in Umzimkhulu the ANC retained its ward. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to SABC News specialist researcher, Maswele Ralebona

SA's political parties are continuing Government of National Unity discussions as the first sitting of the National Assembly post the National and Provincial Elections approaches. Parliament is expected to elect both the speakers of parliament tomorrow and nominate a president elect while speakers of and the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) will be elected on Saturday. Meanwhile, the ANC has yet to make available details of the proposed Government of National Unity. The Alliance Political Council, comprising of the top six officials of the African National Congress, the South African Communist Party and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) are expected to meet at 2pm today in order to consolidate discussions around the possible formation of a Government of National Unity. This comes less than 72 hours before the first sitting of the National Assembly on Friday which is aimed at nominating a president elect, electing a speaker of parliament and his or her deputy. SACP's General Secretary Solly Mapaila says the ANC should not complicate matters but including the DA into the mix. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to Senior SABC Politics reporter, Ntebo Mokobo.

There are only six days left for the 7th Parliament to be formed. Before a Government of National Unity or a coalition is formed, parliament must first be constituted within 14 days of the declaration of the election results. The election of the Speaker, Deputy and the President are critical to the formation of the National Assembly,  while the election of the President is critical to ensure the formation of a government. A quorum of 134 out of the 400 members of the National Assembly is required to elect the Speaker of parliament, Deputy or President. The election of these officials is done through a secret ballot only, if there are other candidates contesting the positions. A president-elect would cease to be a member of the Assembly once elected by the House. President Cyril Ramaphosa says the ANC is seeking a government of national unity, which would reflect the will of people and help move the country forward. He was speaking at the end of the governing party's Special NEC meeting in Boksburg east of Johannesburg last night. President Cyril Ramaphosa has appealed to political parties to recognise that the results of the 2024 national and provincial elections reflect the will of the people. Ramaphosa was speaking at a ceremony to announce the final results at the National Results Operations Centre in Midrand, north of Johannesburg. While acknowledging the glitches and difficulties experienced on the two-year journey to this point, the IEC has expressed satisfaction with the work it has performed in administering 19 regional, provincial and national polls, using the services of over 200-thousand staff across 23-thousand-200 voting stations.
