Sara Karnes from the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) stepped back into the studio with Grace on 105.1 The Bull to preview the second half of June 2026 across the Ozarks. From glowing bugs to misunderstood reptiles, here is what is happening in our local outdoors.Catch the Glow: Firefly ProgramsFireflies are a summer staple, and MDC has two unique programs to help families enjoy them:

  • Branson: Head to the Shepherd of the Hills Conservation Education Center on June 20th from 8:00 PM to 9:30 PM to learn about and look for lightning bugs.
  • Springfield: Visit Phelps Grove Park on June 25th from 5:30 PM to 9:30 PM for firefly-themed games, crafts, and educational fun.

Nature Programs & Skills Classes

  • Snakes in the Park (Joplin): Overcome your fears at Landreth Park on June 23rd from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM. Discover how local snakes provide vital pest control and balance the ecosystem.
  • Virtual Native Fish Breeding: Dive into local aquatic life with a virtual class on June 24th from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM exploring the diverse fish native to the Ozarks.
  • Hunting Basics (In-Person & Virtual): Want to learn to hunt but don't know where to start? The Andy Dalton Shooting Range and Education Center is hosting a beginner's guide on June 25th from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

Storytime at the Nature Center

  • Springfield: On June 26th from 10:00 AM to noon, the Springfield Conservation Nature Center is teaming up with the Library Center. The mobile library truck will be on-site for a special nature storytime focused on critters like moles, snakes, bats, and insects.
