On Memorial Day, 2020, Minneapolis Police killed George Floyd during an arrest for passing a counterfeit $20 bill.  The death lead to community protests after a social media video of the event went viral showing police kneeling on Floyd's neck.  The next week lead to some of the most passionate, intense and eventually violent protests and riots the Twin Cities have seen since at least the 1960's.
