A driver was treated for smoke inhalation after his garbage truck caught fire Friday morning, Dec. 27.

Burlington firefighters responded at 8:12 a.m. to North Main Street and Glendale Avenue, where the truck operated by Green for Life was burning with fires in the engine and passenger compartments, and the trash hopper. Crews had to cut an access hole in the top of the truck to extinguish the fire in the hopper, the Fire Department said Friday afternoon.

The fire was brought under control at 8:59 a.m. No one else was injured.

The fire originated in the engine compartment from an undetermined cause, the Fire Department said. Damage is estimated at $50,000.

Seventeen fire personnel fought the fire, the Fire Department said, and police assisted with traffic control.
